Gen17: 1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
(Gen 15:18).
One thing is to know about covenant another thing is walking in or practicing the covenant. Living daily in conscious alignment with your covenant relationship with God is called covenant practice.
Hence the covenant is what defines your duties or responsibilities and your rights or benefits from
God, you have to consciously and consistently practice it.
Things that help your covenant practice
- You must have understanding: Of What you seek from God, Of What is expected of you to always do in that regard, and of what will happen if you fail on your duties. (Prov 21:16)
- You have to Walk in Complete Obedience: For any covenant to yield your dream, your willingness to keep your part is not negotiable (Isaiah 1:19, Job 36:11)
- Practical obedience – following God’s word, keeping your part even if it’s not convenient (Psalm 15:4.…He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.) Maintaining biblical principles to help boost your obedience.
- Practicing in faith and trust: (Hab 2:4). – In covenant practice we walk by faith and not by feelings or sight. Hence covenant benefits doesn’t show in the beginning, there’s need to stay focused even when results are yet to happen. (Heb 10:36) (Eccl 11:3). You must continue practicing and in trusting God despite the circumstances. (Gal 6:9).
- Maintain Covenant Relationship: (Romans 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;) For the covenant to yield results, we must maintain Covenant relationship with God. Speaking the obvious, declaring the results, studying the scriptures, maintaining worship.
- Walk in love and integrity: Because God is a God of justice, you must maintain justice
- Truthfulness and mercy
- Maintain faithfulness: Avoid breaking your intimate relationship with God.
Other things that may boost your covenant practice: Giving, sacrifice, tithing, offering, helping the needy and service in Church.
Walk in consciousness of your covenant: Be aware that you’re committed to God, in the matter of Covenant (1Sam 2:30). Heaven backs only those who are covenant keepers – Heb 13:5.
Mistakes believers make while in covenant
- They see covenant as transaction and not relationship: they only come to covenant because of what they need, and once they get it, they walk away. That is why many easily lose their covenant benefits so soon.
- Selective obedience: Obeying God in areas of convenience, while ignoring others.
- Weakening covenant through unforgiveness: Not knowing that unforgiveness blocks covenant blessings.
- Ignoring terms of the covenant: Ignoring your responsibilities in the covenant relationship will destroy the benefits.
- Expecting covenant benefits without covenant responsibilities: If you are not ready to do what is expected of you don’t expect good results.
